Narrating the city
Initial Filmic Representations
Narrating the city – In these short films young residents of four Italian cities present an understanding of their marginal neighborhoods to the anthropologist who appears to represent a showcase for the outside world. The participants were asked to illustrate the key features of the territory which are meaningful to them in their everyday lives. Such implicit understandings are here given conscious expression in a way the children believe is understandable to the outsider. It is a form of intimate tourism providing an unusual perspective on urban districts which rarely receive favorable attention from mainstream media. The remarkable feature of these filmic narratives is the capacity to illustrate a condition of normality in areas which are not entirely normal. Children draw selectively from publicly available urban resources to support aspirations for healthy lives, bearing witness to their capacity to normalize their physical universe through a spontaneous worlding process.
